Designed by William Platt in 1930, the residence initially sat on 19 acres and was built by the E.W. Howell Company. Beechwood has undergone an extensive historical restoration which boasts all the modern conveniences set amid spectacular English Gardens . It was one of many Glen Cove estates associated with a prominent industrialist family of the early 20th century that owned Standard Oil.

Other noteworthy structures include the Herbert L. Pratt estate, which also goes by the name The Braes, which was built in 1912. The grand building is currently home to the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering campus. It was also featured in the film Batman Forever.

Built around the same time, Killenworth was originally home of George DuPont Pratt and was acquired by the Soviet government in 1951. It has long been used as the vacation home of the United Nations’ Russian delegation.

One of the grandest of the Pratt homes was the Manor House, which took a half dozen years to construct and was finished in 1915. During the late 20s and early 30s, the residence gained attention as President Herbert Hoover’s “Summer White House.” Now a commercial establishment, it welcomes guests as the Glen Cove Mansion Hotel and Conference Center.

Another unique Pratt estate is “Welwyn Manor” on Crescent Beach Road, which is now known as The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center at Welwyn Preserve.
